If your system doesn’t stop you from overtrading,it’s incomplete.

I had that issue before and I agree with that. If the system doesn’t limit you, it’s really easy to overtrade without even realizing it. At first, I thought I was just being active, but in reality I was forcing trades. The biggest impact wasn’t even one big loss, it was all the small things adding up like spreads, slippage, and just taking lower quality setups. I set a max number of trades per day and only take setups that actually match my plan. Some days that means no trades at all. Feels boring sometimes, but performance is way more stable.

More than system, it’s about discipline and self-awareness. You can have solid rules, but if you keep overriding them, the system won’t help much. Overtrading usually comes from emotions like boredom or trying to recover losses. The real fix is sticking to limits and knowing when not to trade, even if setups look tempting.

There are always 2 reasons for overtrading. First, when you are glued to charts and start seeing setups in every candle. Second, when you break discipline after a loss and try to recover quickly. Both come from emotional trading, not the system itself. Without strict rules for entries and daily limits, overtrading will always creep in over time in trading.

with a well detailed trading plan, we can easily come up with a customised EA that only monitors and informs you once you exceed your trading limits per day

Can’t ignore the psychological side of it. Even with a solid system, overtrading usually comes from emotions like boredom, FOMO, or trying to recover losses, not the strategy itself. Risk rules help, but if discipline isn’t there, traders still find ways to break them. That’s why execution matters just as much as the setup.

There's a great system to avoid over-trading....going broke. Maybe the dumbest post I have seen here.

Overtrading stopped only when I added hard limits, not just entry rules. Max trades per day and max loss per day look simple, but they protect you from yourself when emotions are high

Honestly I learned this the hard way. Nowadays with all the headlines and sudden moves, sometimes the market just feels like pure TACO mode and it’s easy to get dragged into overtrading. Having rules for when not to trade is probably just as important as having a strategy.

'Over trading' is subjective, 5 trades a day could be too little for some and too much for others.

I would advise to focus on only criteria-met trades instead of putting a number to the amount of trades daily/weekly.
