Hello, My name is John, I am a construction worker, I had been out of work since 2009, but I am back to work now. I am 53 y.o. and have just a few years left until retirement. I have been studying FOREX trading since mid 2009 and absolutely love trading from my laptop. I am truly impressed with the vast amount of information and different robots and systems involved. My problem is win 8. I would just like a computer dedicated to trading and I need an operating system I can use. I am not like you guys, when I have a problem at work I get a hammer. Hit it as hard as I can. If the problem still exists I get a bigger hammer. I have been doing this for 26 years. I want Forex trading to be my new career. Could someone recommend a computer that I can buy and use with out calling india. I also would gladly pay someone to set up my trading platform as I cannot do it myself. I would send it to you. I would be very grateful for your help. Thanks John

urmm, I am not sure John, you never mentioned will you be running your system 24/7 for EAs or will you be intraday trading. for the latter you don't need too much just mid range processor and RAM and win7 will suffice. If you going to run it overnight or 247 then you need to consider getting dedicated cooling system maybe so your machine doesn't wear and tear as much. I hate win8 too you are not alone there

win 8 with the missing start buttons, got to hate it, had to find a custom start button to use.
Anyway with regards to your question, let me see, any basic pc config within the 1k to 2k range would be just fine for normal trading.
if you're running an above average trade frequency EA, then you probably need a good connection for trade execution, else you will be getting lots of 'Trade Context is Busy' or your trades falling in the lower end of the slippage range. Best way is to co-locate your trade server to your's broker trading server, you could check with your broker if they run co-location services.
Co-location is something like... erm say you have to visit the supermarket or hardware store everyday, wouldn't it be great if you are located like right next door, then you could just walk by.

Typical construction worker! Sometimes a hammer is just what I need to solve computer issues...a big hammer! My attempts at humor aside, VPS sounds good, but why not a laptop running an older version of Windows? Alternatively, this video may help:

*This following post only applies if you want to use automated trading*
I urge you to consider why serious traders use vps not their own machines.
If your internet/electricity cuts out for just a second your EA activity is disrupted and all of your account's equity are at an unnecessary risk of loss!!
Adding the laptop element is even worse, using a laptop which does not do great running 24/7..laptops also have built in mechanisms to switch off if they overheat.
I use a cheap vps, pm me if you want to know what it is, its not amazing but its affordable.
Vps internet is much more likely to stay up compared to retail internet, they also have their own generators if power cuts out.

Depends on the time frame you are trading. If you trade H4 or daily with a stop, then you don't need 24/7 connection, but if you scalp M15 or M5 you do need a reliable connection. 😎

Hey John,
solution for you is very simple, you do not need to buy strong computer.
You can rent VPS for a small monthly fee.
It is virtual computer running 24/7 with fast connectivity to trade servers.

Both sides of the coin. VPS is one way to go if you have a 'set and forget' EA. I have personally used Professors VPS above in the past and it was fine and he is great to work with.
On the other side of the coin, I prefer a more hands on PC that I have physical access to. I run my trading platform MT4 on an old dell that still has Vista home 32 bit on it in my office at home. MT4 itself does not require all that much power. And if running only a couple instances of MT4, it has been fine for years...for me.
Some EA's can use a lot of resources. Others not so much. If you are looking for a high end multiple monitor setup that can handle anything, you might look at various gaming systems by different manufacturers like Alienware or HP. Gaming requires strong 3d graphics and high end processors and cooling to protect those systems. Go with a desktop instead of a laptop for better cooling and fix ability.
If you plan on doing a lot of back testing that requires high end processing, you could simplify your life by just going with something that is highly recommended in the gaming category.
If you decide to keep your dedicated trading station at home and not go with a VPS, I would highly recommend an Uninterruptable Power Supply to protect against power outages and protect your investment.
That's my two cents worth - Good Luck 😄

LOL - Yeah sure. The PC on the left is a basic Dell about 6 years old running Windows Vista 32 bit. It has been running MT4 for about 5 years now off and on. The one on the right is an HP Z220 Workstation. Basic model I use for my personal business and back testing. More than enough to do what I need.

Laptop with docking station (usb3, asus perhaps) that can handle 2 extra monitors. Plugs in and you can forget it.
If you are really worried about it, make sure you have a UPS (universal power supply) on your system, including the modem, and get an optical line to the house, or a lan cable from your local company if you are lucky enough to be that close (my power goes out and my router is on the ups, and with the cable from them, i still have internet on my lappy even when power is down.)
Any decent new laptop will do.

That is a pretty basic set up. Maybe I will find a tutor so that I can use and organize all the websites for forex. I think I can work for 2 3 more years in construction. I will try vps so I can trade with someones expertise. There are so many out there. If I started with 1000 us will I be able to pay the fees. Do they require more margin because they are automated.

John, I am going to pour oil onto your water now.
I have not found in 25 years of trading an EA that works/wins consistantly without blowing the account sooner or later.
An EA is the only thing you want to run on a vps. Otherwise you don't need them. You have tp's and stop placed from a normal computer so it doesn't matter if it crashes for 6 hours.
Just the fact that you want trading to be your new career, does not mean that it is going to be your new career.
Are you consistantly profitable now for real?
That is the question you need to answer honestly to yourself.

Phonix is correct, its hard to make a lving trading with a EA with the risks involved. I can set my OWN EA at a minor rate and have minor growth or increase the risk for increased profits. It goes hand in hand. Can you back test and are you comfortable forward testing EAs? I loe the grids and martingales, but they can be risky.
