I have a problem of slow or not responding MT4 platforms. I don't think that my resources are the problem, or are they? I use a VPS with 6GB Ram and quad core processors. What would limit me from running as many MT4 platforms that I want? It seems the more I run the slower they get. If I check to resources being used I only see about 1.5GB RAM being used and about 15% processor power, but still the more platforms I run the slower and slower it gets. They are all still reporting to myfxbook every 5 minutes, but if I try to view the platform it does not always display or takes a very long time. The problem is worse during heavy market activity. At night when the market are slower the platforms respond quicker. Each platforms has an average of 4-8 charts open each running one EA. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

How many are you running? There might not be a problem with your RAM, but how many cores is your processor? It may be a problem with open threads running through the processor. Also, are you running anything else on that computer? Again, your bottleneck could be the hard drive too. Are you running the same file over and over from a 5400 rpm drive?

Hey, MT4 platforms runs with high resources, I cannot say it in numbers. But if you have a look at https://www.cheap-forex-vps.com/index.php/forex-vps-plans you can see an average number of MT4 platforms according to the technical ressources.
It is tough, and once my VPS has been frozen because of a high volume of data transfer. So choose wisely the correct service to run the number of platforms you need.

Thanks for the comment. The VPS uses a 4 core processor, 6 GB RAM, 100 GB hard drive. I run 2-10 EA's on each platform running. So when I am running 8 platforms I have an about 30 or so EA's running.

I checked out the information. They say you can run about 25 terminals using 3GB of RAM. It doesn't mention have many EA's can be running. Sure you can run 25 platform with no charts that's no problem. As soon as you add charts, indicators, and EA's you are using a lot more resources. For the top plan they offer 2 -3 GB. I'm not sure what they mean by 2 - 3 GB RAM, is it 2 or 3 GB?

I run 20 regularly on a dedicated server. If you're co-hosting on a VPS someone else might be getting your resources. I don't think I'd have any problem going to 40 or higher.
But I also have a very high spec server, 32 GIG RAM and everything that comes with that...

Wow, nice specs. Are you using a VPS? If so, which one?
Thanks.

It's not virtual in theory, it should be a dedicated box in a server farm, but then again who knows what really goes on there.

Hi,
You can reduce PC load by decreasing
'Max bars in history'; Max bars in chart'
I hope that it will help.

Yes agree, that's what I did with my platforms, I reduced them to the min, as there's anyway no indicators what will use more than 2500 bars. I disabled all the other crap like emails from the broker and alerts. And it did improve significantly. Furthermore I use only standard MT4 platforms from Metaquotes, and made them portable, however I dunno if that last step had a big effect in performance.

If running slow, can check the TaskManager how many memory taken by Terminal.exe.
It might shoot up to 400-500MB if you had download history data for back test.
In this case, you need to delete the history data manually.
Example : D:\AlpariNZ\History\
After delete the history, restart platform and it will run faster.

If You can edit EA,
then You can make them do NOT work on EVERY TICK (this is too much calculations)
Especially 5-digits server's generate too much ticks.
(change of 5-th digit do not generate tick on 4-digits server)
I made my EA to work once per minute (it is input parameter).
And I have no problem with (5 platform)*(3 EA each)
on CPU 2 core * 1.6 Ghz, and 3Gb RAM.
Also I have SSD instead of HDD,
this can significant improve performance of the computer at all.

For your example put it on harddrive D:, you have to make it portable, just start your platform via shortcut and add '/portable'. I hope the OP doesn't pull the stunt to run BT on a VPS. I just got the cheapforexvps basic plan, which should be for 5 platforms max. After made my 'tuning' I did run 7 platforms with ~35charts running EA's without any problems.

There are some internal limitations on how much one VPS can take.
I would recommend you getting dedicated server where you could smoothly run 32 MT4 terminals on that.
Personally, I recommend Dedicated Forex Server from ForexVPS.net

Are you running any back testing at the same time on this VPS? Some EAs can run a pc hot during back testing.

I noticed the same thing on my VPS even though I was using 14 GB memory. After 8 or more terminals were open (averaging 10 - 20 charts on each) when testing various EA settings on multiple demo accounts, the VPS became very sluggish especially during busy hours. I thought purchasing more and more ram would solve the problem, but it didn't. I later found out that on most VPS servers the cpu is shared (similar to shared web hosting). So if I have multiple MT4's open on my vps, and several other people sharing my cpu also have several ea's and MT4's opened etc..., this can cause it to become sluggish for everyone sharing the same cpu. I am now considering getting a dedicated server so I won't have to share cpu. But it is more expensive. When a vps is very, very cheap there is a chance it is oversold and several customers are sharing the same cpu although they have their own disc space and memory.

You can run up to 32 mt4 instances on one server.
32 is limit of MT4 itself.
To run them smoothly restart occasionally otherwise one MT4 could eat up 1 GB of RAM over time.
