- Question to Swing Traders.
Question to Swing Traders.
As a swing trader, I always trade in the direction of positive swaps (unless the negative swap is smaller than 7 usd per lot). On the other hand, this increases the risk of price turning against me, if sudden risk aversion happens. How do you solve this? I mean, we can trade in both directions equally, but if a trade runs for days or even weeks, negative swaps can erase most of the profit, or make the loss much bigger. Some negative swaps reach 20 usd, and its x3 on Wednesday to Thursday rollover. And which pairs have the largest negative swaps? Yes, exactly the riskiest in term of risk aversion: Highest yielding against the Safe Haven. So if we want to save on swaps, we buy the highest yielding against the lowest yielding, and those pairs turn against us the most, in case of risk-off.
For swing trades with hfm (1–2 weeks), what helped me most was sizing for the average pullback so normal noise doesn’t force an early exit
Even scalpers end up paying attention to swaps once they hold something longer than planned, so you’re not overthinking it. For swings, I treat swap like a nice bonus, not the reason for the trade, and I’ll only take the direction I actually like on the chart. If the negative swap is ugly, I either tighten the timeframe so it’s a shorter hold, trade a pair with less punishment, or just skip it and wait for a cleaner setup. Curious, do you ever hedge the rollover day or just avoid holding through Wednesday entirely?
I treat swap as a tiebreaker, not a thesis: take the direction your setup demands, then manage cost by shortening hold time, switching pairs, or sizing for rollover.
If swaps are becoming a big part of the decision, I’d personally simplify and stick mostly with majors where financing is usually less extreme and liquidity is better. You might earn a bit less carry, but you also avoid building a swing bias around swaps that can flip fast when sentiment turns
I get your point but I have always treated swap like a cost because earning from swap feels more like a carry trade strategy than swing trading. I mostly stick to majors and minors for swing trading so swap is not that much of a nuisance for me but I guess that is just a difference in approach.
