Swing trading strategies

No, I'm not really a swing trader. I'd like to be one, because of the time available. Every time I try to transition into swing trading I blow my tiny account. I made my decision to close my position with a heavy loss.

The day before yesterday (Wednesday, first of May), there was this FED interest rate decision day. USDCHF had been sinking all day long, daily chart showed that I should short, for several days it had been like that. I waited over the the interest rate decision, which was unchanged. I waited appr. half an hour, and went heavily shorting. Bang! Within next ten minutes there was a 60 pips move up, and I was on the wrong side. I'm questioning my sanity now 😕So, even daily charts can be misleading.Today, there is this Non Farm Payrolls day. Maybe these are the reasons for the quiet pas...

I remember I read while doing one of my studies(googling) that one should look for daily chart, since that is how the big players work.If one looks for EURUSD it can be seen that in weekly time frame it is bearish. However, I am currently in long position, since I think it can be traded both ways. I think EURUSD is currently in so called ranging-trending market condition. I started too early, and my S&R analysis did not work. It would have helped, if I had opened a much smaller position. I'll see how it works out this time.I think, too, that there is no fixed rule in which time frame ...

The idea of the money management is to remain solvent as long as the big move comes :)

I would use cent account with a tiny budget, because it allows more flexible money management. As someone said one should not trade indicators alone. Even if it is said that Bollinger bands with std deviations of 2 holds 95 per cent of the price action inside the bands, it still fails time to time. Solution to this would be decreasing the lot size, and testing in which direction does the move go.If the trend goes to the expected direction, then by all means I would open additonal positions to the trade.

I suppose that you are talking about diversification both in time, and as you said in different currencies. That mitigates risk. Perhaps it allows one to over leverage, too. Perhaps then it is possible to get gains comparable to scalping, right?

In addition to this I would mention thar there are brokers with cent accounts. That means, one can trade even smaller than microlots.

What would be the realistic monthly gain with swing trading? I see as a biggest problem with scalping that it is so time consuming, and requires constant attention. It seems that it is not intended for those who have a day job or a family.

I'm about in the same situation like you. Been in forex since 2014, and slowly beginning to understand how stuff works.I have been watching those youtube videos, too, and most of them are simply boring or off-topic regarding to my style.I favor using lower time frames for entries, and exits, and higher for directions.Once you have figured out your S&R levels I would use full stochastic oscillator (5,3,3,) like in MT. In the lower time frame I would use in/out 10 period SMA, or crossover of 10 & 20 period SMA. I like fiddling with Bollinger Bands, SMA's, and full stochastic. Som...

Do you mean that the trade should be opened with maximum position size (i.e trade lot size) straight away, initially, such that adding later to the position is no longer possible?

I have an idea of using Bollinger Bands as S&R levels. As said buy from the vicinity of the lower band and sell from the higher. Use a stochastic oscillator as confirmation. Maybe use one lower chart for time frame for refining the entries & exits. 50 SMA for confirming that the trade is not totally against the main trend.Maybe patterns can be used as an extra means for validating the trade, but isn't it almost the same as the pin bar technique?I need something, which doesn't require me sitting in front of the computer all the time.

Is it possible to gain double digit monthly wins by swing trading? Let's say 10-15 percent by average.Time frame in question would be daily chart. I would use stochastic oscillator (5,3,3) in unison with Bollinger bands without median. Maybe mixing it with 50 D SMA on top.Buy from lower band and sell from upper band. How I currently understand is that it is highly unlikely to get such figures. More realistic would be 5% per month. Risk is insane. Volatility is insane. However, I would like to hear opposite views too. Any suggestions for improving this approach?

I think it is possible manually by staying attached to the screen all the time. Trader sits, and hunts for moves (preferably shorts) in 1H time frame, and bases his actions on that. Currecy pairs in question would be those with lowest spreads, most likely EURUSD or not so often USDJPY.This allows no other life, family or work. All the time outside of the bed should be scheduled to trading. Then it would be possible.I was able to stand this for 3 mo's.I don't know about programming EA's.

I did it :) One 1-3 months work given back overnight :-/ Fortunately, it is no more than a dinner at a restaurant, but shred me into pieces. I'm annoyed to GBP and Brexit altogether. GBP has a strong tendency for whipsaws.

What is going on with those spikes? I've noticed that this happens especially with GBP related currency pairs. JPY is prone for abrupt sell offs.

"I need to get it back. Now!" - style of mentality. After losing a big chunk of money a strong need of winning lost money back. Increasing lot size considerably. Related to the martingale strategy. Sometimes works but most often not. Results to even more losses.

True. If the crowds run the price the price will fall if the crowds lose their interest in Bitcoin. If the price falls further the rest of the big investors starts selling off saving what they can. Maybe the future is with some other cryptocoin?

It is going to be a long wait if the question is about ranging ahead of next weeks NFP. 1) Bollinger bands are flat (=horizontally) in 4H time frame.2) Does not really matter. Spread decides if the range is tradeable or not. The wider the bands are the better.3) I would look for another currency pair to trade. Range is not very profitable, in my experience. I know I'm using wrong tools, but still.
How much have you lost in forex trading?

I've lost a bit less than $1k, it hurts but I think it is actually a reasonable amount. At first I lost in a rapid phase, then it slowed down. I started to win in 1M to 15M time frames. Then I tried to figure out how to trade in longer time frames, and began losing again. But the most rapid loss was with BTCUSD, since I thought it would be a nice idea to have something to do during weekends. Fortunately, I quit that stupidity, and started to win again. Now I'm only appr. 800 bucks in minus. This all took 4 years..
